Silence. Not Always Golden

November 18, 2007

Sorry.  Upon further review, I realize that THAT title is a lot more ominous than I had intended.  Let me start by saying that Jenn, myself and especially Catriona are all wonderful.  No one is sick, ill or injured.  But you will see before this post is done, why the title says what has been going through my mind today.

Catriona has had some busy times lately.  Mainly it’s been a life of figuring out whose hands keep touching her face (the answer is, they are her own hands), getting a better handle on when sleepy time is VS when play time is, and naturally the usual eating, sleeping, diaper destroying that all babies learn and love.  But she also has had some adventures.  A few weeks ago, she had to have a head X-ray, to see why she suddenly had new bumps on her head.  Our family doctor was concerned that maybe the bones in her head might be fusing too early, which can lead to brain injury, and sometimes decreased brain function in the future.  So it is important to be proactive when this is the possible outcome.  As far as we know, there is nothing to report.  We haven’t officially heard back from the doctor’s office on it, but what matters more is that the bumps have now disappeared and Cat’s head seems as lacking in lumps as it should be.  I can’t stress this enough:  BABIES AND X-RAYS ARE AN EVIL MIXTURE.  Avoid at all costs, unless you like screaming.  But I listen to heavy metal and even I had never heard screaming like Catriona put out that day.

We also dressed up Catriona for Hallowe’en.  She was a little penguin and thankfully she slept a great deal of the time that the costume was on.  Pictures on flickr are pending (mainly due to time management issues on my part, but I’m working on it).

Last weekend, Jenn’s choir had a shower for her and Catriona where Cat received all sorts of wonderful gifts.  All useful and beautiful and we can’t really ever thank Jenn’s amazing choir-mates, for all they do for her/us.

But the fun didn’t stop there.  This weekend, Catriona and Jenn had a surprise shower thrown for them, by Jenn’s friend Lori, and Jenn’s Mom (who we call Grandma around here now).  My Mom, and some of Jenn’s friends, along with extended family came down to Carol’s house for the party and everyone had a good time.  Then Jenn took Catriona to the Bellefontaine family Christmas party (I didn’t feel well, so I stayed home and rested), and lots of people there hadn’t seen Jenn in more than a year (in some cases, longer than that), and no one had seen Catriona.  I’m sure she was the hit of the party (she often is).  Sunday, Jenn, Jenn’s Mom, Anne and Lori all got together (with Catriona of course), to do their annual Christmas baking day.  So as you can see it’s been a super busy weekend for Mother and Baby (and needless to say a quiet one around home for me).  I missed them all terribly while they were gone, but I’m glad that Jenn and Catriona had a change of event and scenery, and that I had a chance to do a couple of things that I wanted to as well.  A nice change, but I like spending time with my family so hopefully next weekend we can all do something together.

Oh and why is silence NOT always golden.  Well, last evening, Catriona went to sleep at 10pm.  As did Jenn and I.  Jenn woke me up at about 4:30am and asked me to go check on Catriona because Jenn was scared to.  Cat is normally an extremely noisy sleeper but last night she made absolutely zero noise the whole time and it freaked us right out.  So I checked on her, with my heart pounding and some sweat on my brow, and I couldn’t hear her breathing even standing beside her crib.  So I stuck my finger in her ear, because I needed to hear her make any sort of noise.  Of course she responded with a snort or two, and then continued to sleep.  In total, Catriona probably slept about 7.5 hours straight last night (no I won’t get used to it.  Tonight she’ll probably wake up every 2 just to balance it all out).  Normally she’s awake every 4 hours.  7.5 straight freaked us out way too badly.  So while I’m glad she can do it, I think I need her to stick to the 4 hours.  At least for a little longer.

Photos on flickr soon, and hopefully more adventures for here even sooner.
